PBA: Back-to-back wins for ROS after sinking Northport

Looks like Rain or Shine is starting to find its groove. The Elasto Painters made it back-to-back wins in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, sinking Northport, 120-98, Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome. Following a 0-4 start, ROS has now improved to 2-4 and are pretty much in the thick of the playoff race. "We played back-to-back good games," head coach Caloy Garcia said. "Everybody was hitting it from anywhere so I think this is just our day, sana tuluy-tuloy yung ganitong laro namin," he added. Chris Tiu led a balanced attack from Rain or Shine, firing a career-high 23 points, 15 in the final period. Three other players finished with at least 20 points for the Elasto Painters with import Terrence Watson and Beau Belga going for 21 each. Belga didn't miss in eight attempts from field. James Yap added 20 points for good measure. Northport, coming into the game with back-to-back victories, crashed and didn't get anything going from the start. The Batang Pier trailed by as many as 25 points and dropped to 2-7 with the loss. Import Rashad Woods led the team with 30 points.   The Scores: Rain or Shine 120 - Tiu 23, Belga 21, Watson 21, Yap 20, Ahanmisi 13, Norwood 10, Ponferada 5, Borboran 3, Torres 2,Daquioag 2, Washington 0. NorthPort 98 - Woods 30, Anthony 17, Taha 14, Guinto 10, Pringle 9, Javelona 7, Grey 6, Espinas 3, Elorde 2, Gabayni 0, Arana 0, Fortuna 0.    Quarters: 35-19, 63-43, 87-71, 120-98.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Almazan will have to regain spot with ROS says Garcia: 'Magkahiyaan naman tayo'

The Raymond Almazan saga could be nearing its conclusion. Almazan, Rain or Shine's top center, was still a no show Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome as the Elasto Painters won back-to-back games in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, beating Northport by 22 points. It's been weeks since Almazan went AWOL for Rain or Shine and contact with him has been limited and spotty at best. But with ROS picking up a 120-98 decision over the Batang Pier, pushing the Elasto Painters' record to 2-2 without Almazan and 2-4 for the conference, some light has been shed on the big man's mysterious disappearance. For one, it appears that Almazan is set to finally sit down with team management to sort this one out. "Wala pa ako nababalitaan," head coach Caloy Garcia said. "Actually with Raymond, I think they're having a meeting on Saturday. I haven't talked to him, I think management will talk to him on Saturday," he added. With rumors flying around that Garcia is part of the reason why Almazan decided to go AWOL, the Rain or Shine mentor simply brushed it off. Garcia defended himself, saying that he's only doing his job as head coach and would like to keep things professional overall. "Actually for me, nagulat nga ako dun na ako tinuro eh. At the end of the day I'm just doing my job. There was just a time that I told him... kasi madalas siya mag-absent at ma-late, we're losing and we needed him to come in and work. I didn't know that that's gonna cause this because lahat naman tanggap nila everybody comes in early and works and it's working right now," Garcia said. "If that's the reason why, it's my job to discipline the players. Samin nga wala nga kaming fine eh, so wag naman nila i-ano, sobra sobra naman na alam mo na. Basically we're just trying to be professionals," he added. With Rain or Shine chasing a playoff spot in the Governors' Cup, the Elasto Painters could certainly use the boost that Almazan is set to give once he returns to the team. However, Almazan's actual return will not be as simple as him showing up and being fielded for the rest of Rain or Shine's games this season. "Just be professional, yun lagi kong iniisip. If he shows up in practice and wants to play, then he has to work for it. Basically yun sinasabi ko sa mga players, magkahiyaan naman tayo," Garcia said. "You see players come in and really work hard that I don't even give chances to play. Pero sabi ko nga sa kanila, they should set good examples, especially the veterans. Hopefully, if ever mapa-isip siya maglaro, I hope he comes ready to play as a professional," he added.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
