ONE Championship: Edward Kelly wants to prove that he can beat Christian Lee

Team Lakay featherweight Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly is coming into his rematch against Singaporean star Christian "The Warrior" Lee at ONE: Eternal Glory in Jakarta, Indonesia with a hightened sense of motivation.  While indeed he was victorious in their first fight back in September of 2018, the win didn't come the way Kelly would have wanted.  After landing a slam that was deemed illegal, Lee was disqualified becase Kelly was unable to continue.  Now, the hard-hitting Pinoy striker wants, more than anything, to prove that he can beat Lee without the help of a disqualification.  "A win is a win, but parang walang tamang closure yung laban namin, so gusto ko ipakita na talagang ako dapat yung nanalo sa laban namin," Kelly told the media a day before his highly-anticipated rematch on Saturday night. "Of course, siya din may gustong patunayan, makikita na lang natin sa Saturday kung mag-eeffect yung good gameplan." While their first encounter lasted just a little over two minutes, Kelly says that he was able to take some things away from what he saw from Lee that night. The 34-year old hopes to be able to use those things in their do-over at the Istora Senayan.  "Yung napansin ko nung unang laban namin is aggressive siya, masyado siyang agresibo, and pasok ng pasok," Kelly explained. "Mabilis nga lang yung laban pero at least may nakuha ako na points sa aking pag-ensayo, sana magamit ko yun para ma-kontra yung pagka-explosive niya tsaka yung speed niya sa laban." The 20-year old Lee, who's a former title contender, is coming into this fight having bounced back with a first roudn win over Kazuki Tokudome. Kelly knows that right now, the kid's confidence is riding high, and is banking on the possibility that it's that same confidence that could lead to Lee's downfall.  "Alam ko naman na sky-high yung confidence niya, and I know na parang kokontrahin ko na lang sa isip ko, and yung confidence niya ay pwedeng magpa-talo sa kanya." While largely regarded as the underdog heading into the bout, Kelly says that he prefers to be in that position. That way, the victory becomes a bit sweeter.  "Mas gusto ko pa nga na underdog, kasi mas maganda yung pagka-panalo, yun yung nasa isip ko. Kailangan ko talaga kunin yung panalo, and gagawin ko lahat sa laban na ‘to," he expressed.    Edward Kelly and Christian Lee face off in a highly-anticipated rematch at ONE: Eternal Glory on Saturday, January 19th, 11:00 PM LIVE on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23! .....»»

ONE Championship: Surrounded by champions, Edward Kelly looking to get gold of his own

Filipino featherweight Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly is looking to begin his own path to gold this 2019.  After all, the 34-year old striker was witness to four of his Team Lakay teammates winning ONE World Championship gold in 2018, and he says that it's been nothing but a source of inspiration and motivation.  More so that at featherweight, Kelly is the lone warrior representing the La Trinidad, Benguet-based stable.  "Talagang nasa akin yun, kasi pine-pressure na nila ako na [featherweight na lang yung kulang]," Kelly shared with a chuckle.  "Tine-take ko as inspiration yun, talagang well-motivated ako na sige, ipapakita ko, gusto kong patunayan sa sarili ko, hoping na maipapakita ko lahat sa laban ko sa Sabado," he added.  Kelly's first challenge on the journey is none other than former title contender Christian Lee, who's hungry to get a win over Kelly after getting disqualified in their first encounter back in 2018. The Filipino believes that a win over Lee, one of the division's top contenders, would definitely put him in the conversation as well.  Adding even more motivation will be the fact that reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Martin "The Situ-Asian" Nguyen is expected to be at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta to catch the Kelly-Lee rematch in person.  "Sumagi na rin yun sa isip ko, kasi pagkaka-alam ko, manonood si Martin Nguyen ng live sa laban namin, and if i win over Christian Lee, alam naman natin na siya yung bini-build up para lumaban sa championship," Kelly explained. "Kung matalo ko [siya], andun na rin ako, mga one to two fights, si Nguyen na." Before thinking about a title shot however, Kelly will need to get past Lee first, and it won't be an easy task.  While Lee has stated publicly that he's gunning for a knockout in the first round, Kelly maintains that it won't be as simple as the 20-year old Singaporean makes it out to be.  "Siyempre yun yung opinion niya as a fighter, pero siyempre hindi naman yun basta-basta. Tayo rin naman nag-ensayo, and willing akong ipakita kung ano yung pinag-ensayuhan ko." Kelly adds that he sees the fight going the distance, unless he can find a way to finish it earlier.  "Basa ko, aabot ng three rounds, kung hindi ko siya ma-knockout, kung hindi ko siya ma-tiempohan," he stated.    Edward Kelly and Christian Lee face off in a highly-anticipated rematch at ONE: Eternal Glory on Saturday, January 19th, 11:00 PM LIVE on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23! .....»»

Alab Pilipinas re-ignites in ABL after repulsing Macau

Once more in the continuation of their title defense in the 2018-2019 Asean Basketball League, Alab Pilipinas came off a loss, came through in the next game, and came away with a big-time triumph over another contender. Renaldo Balkman’s game-long brilliance coupled with total team effort in the endgame proved to be the difference on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre as the Filipinos turned down the lights on visiting Macau, 106-99. The two teams were going at it for majority of the matchup until Balkman, PJ Ramos, and Pao Javelona got together for a 10-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that built up an 82-73 edge for the home team. Of course, the Black Bears would only battle back and pulled within two points inside the last six minutes only to see Balkman and Ramos connive yet again, this time alongside Ray Parks Jr., Ethan Alvano, and Caelan Tiongson in a 16-3 answer that re-increased the Alab lead to 106-91. Both the lead and the momentum would remain with them until the final buzzer. In the end, Balkman 37 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists while fellow Puerto Rican reinforcement Ramos contributed his own 21-marker, 14-board double-double. Parks Jr. also did damage with 13 points and 10 assists while point guards Javelona and Alvano merged for 16 markers, 14 dimes, and eight rebounds. This strong showing was nothing but a welcome development as, just five days ago, the Filipinos fell for the second time in the last four games. With the bounce back win, though, the defending champions remained alone atop the leaderboard now at 7-2. On the other hand, Macau dropped to 6-5 in the standings despite the best efforts of Anthony Tucker who had 22 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds to his name.
