Pistons hold on without Drummond, beat Heat 98-93

By NOAH TRISTER,  AP Sports Writer DETROIT (AP) — Blake Griffin had 32 points and 11 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons overcame an early exit by injured Andre Drummond to beat the Miami Heat 98-93 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). Dwyane Wade scored 20 points for the Heat, but missed badly on an off-balance 3-pointer in the final seconds that could have tied the game. Detroit led by 16 in the first half and was up 53-39 at halftime, but the Pistons were outscored 30-12 in the third quarter. They rebounded in the fourth and held on. Drummond left with a nasal injury after being hit in the face in the first quarter by the arm of Miami's James Johnson. Drummond finished with no points in 7:14, and backup Zaza Pachulia scored only two — on a tip-in that put Detroit up 94-91 with 26.7 seconds remaining. The Heat were done in by their abysmal foul shooting. They went 5 of 19 at the line, with center Hassan Whiteside missing all eight of his attempts. Luke Kennard scored 22 points for the Pistons, and Reggie Bullock added 19. Griffin finished an assist shy of a triple-double. TRIBUTE Wade received a nice ovation when he checked into the game in the first quarter, and a message went up on the scoreboard congratulating him on his career. This is Wade's final NBA season, and the Heat won't come to Detroit again unless the teams meet in the playoffs. TIP-INS Heat: Miami was without G Josh Richardson (illness). Pistons: G Ish Smith, who missed 19 games after a right adductor tear in December, left with adductor tightness in his third game back. UP NEXT Heat: Visit the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night. Popovich ties Riley for road wins; Spurs beat Wolves 116-113

By BRIAN HALL,  Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points, Rudy Gay added 22 and the San Antonio Spurs held on to give coach Gregg Popovich another milestone victory in a 116-113 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). The win was the 520th on the road in Popovich's career, tying him with Pat Riley for the most in NBA history. It also continued San Antonio's mastery of Minnesota. The Spurs have won 16 of the past 18 games between the teams. Marco Belinelli added 19 points off the bench for San Antonio, which was playing without leading scorer DeMar DeRozan because of left ankle soreness. Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points for the Timberwolves, but was limited to 21 minutes because of foul trouble. Derrick Rose chipped in 23 points and Taj Gibson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Minnesota lost for the third time in four games. Another matchup between the familiar foes was tight throughout, with 27 lead changes and 17 ties. It also featured a heavy dose of fouls on both sides. The teams combined for 53 personal fouls and 67 free throws. Towns played only 6:13 in a scoreless first quarter, but Minnesota's bench helped make up for his absence. Towns re-entered and had 14 points in the second. He picked up his fourth foul less than two minutes into the second half, and again went to the bench. Josh Okogie had six points and Jeff Teague added five as Minnesota used a 14-1 run to take a 77-67 lead. The Spurs responded with a 13-2 spurt of their own as Davis Bertans hit a pair of 3-pointers. The Wolves led 90-88 to start the fourth, but Bertans opened the quarter with another 3. San Antonio led by seven in the fourth, but Minnesota clawed back to within one with 30.3 seconds left on Rose's layup. Belinelli hit two free throws and Rose's 3 at the buzzer was off the mark. TIP-INS Spurs: Popovich is third in NBA history with 1,224 wins overall. He passed Jerry Sloan for third place on Jan. 10. . San Antonio entered 4-17 this season when trailing after three quarters. Timberwolves: Tyus Jones missed the game with a left ankle sprain sustained Tuesday at Philadelphia. Robert Covington missed his eighth straight game with a right knee bone bruise. . Andrew Wiggins passed Sam Mitchell (7,161) for second place on the franchise's career scoring list. Wiggins has 7,174 points. Kevin Garnett is first with 19,201 points in a Wolves uniform. . After scoring his 10,000th career point on Tuesday, Rose got his 3,000th assist on Friday. . Minnesota announced that Jerry Sichting was hired as an assistant coach. It is Sichting's third stint with the Wolves. He spent 10 years with the team from 1995-2005 and two seasons from 2007-09. UP NEXT Spurs: Return home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Royce O'Neale added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Derrick Favors had 12 points and 10 rebounds in Utah's sixth straight win and eighth in nine games. Ante Zizic and Collin Sexton each scored 15 points, while Cameron Payne had 14 to lead the Cavaliers. Cleveland shot just 21 of 68 (.309) from the field over the first three quarters, allowing the Jazz to pull away early. The Cavaliers took their only lead at 7-6 when Cedi Osman stole a pass from Jae Crowder and set Sexton up for a layup. Utah took the lead for good on back-to-back 3-pointers from Mitchell and O'Neale that sparked a 12-4 run. Gobert finished it off with a dunk off a lob pass from Mitchell, giving Utah an 18-11 lead. The Cavaliers closed within two at 20-18 on a pair of free throws from Payne. Utah then got going from the perimeter near the end of the first quarter and put the game out of reach. Joe Ingles, Crowder, Kyle Korver, and Grayson Allen rattled off four 3-pointers over four straight possessions spanning the first and second quarters. Their outside baskets gave the Jazz a 32-20 lead. It sparked a second quarter during which Utah hit 12 of 20 shots and held Cleveland to just five total baskets. Alab Pilipinas re-ignites in ABL after repulsing Macau

Once more in the continuation of their title defense in the 2018-2019 Asean Basketball League, Alab Pilipinas came off a loss, came through in the next game, and came away with a big-time triumph over another contender. Renaldo Balkman’s game-long brilliance coupled with total team effort in the endgame proved to be the difference on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre as the Filipinos turned down the lights on visiting Macau, 106-99. The two teams were going at it for majority of the matchup until Balkman, PJ Ramos, and Pao Javelona got together for a 10-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that built up an 82-73 edge for the home team. Of course, the Black Bears would only battle back and pulled within two points inside the last six minutes only to see Balkman and Ramos connive yet again, this time alongside Ray Parks Jr., Ethan Alvano, and Caelan Tiongson in a 16-3 answer that re-increased the Alab lead to 106-91. Both the lead and the momentum would remain with them until the final buzzer. In the end, Balkman 37 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists while fellow Puerto Rican reinforcement Ramos contributed his own 21-marker, 14-board double-double. Parks Jr. also did damage with 13 points and 10 assists while point guards Javelona and Alvano merged for 16 markers, 14 dimes, and eight rebounds. This strong showing was nothing but a welcome development as, just five days ago, the Filipinos fell for the second time in the last four games. With the bounce back win, though, the defending champions remained alone atop the leaderboard now at 7-2. On the other hand, Macau dropped to 6-5 in the standings despite the best efforts of Anthony Tucker who had 22 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds to his name.
