UAAP Finals: UP apologizes for school official s controversial post towards Ateneo players

The University of the Philippines has categorically distanced itself from controversial statements posted on social media by one of its school officials. “We dissociate ourselves as a Board from Regent [Spocky] Farolan’s statements and actions,” the UP Board of Regents (BOR), the school’s highest decision-making body, said in a statement released on Monday. It then continued, “Whatever his motives may have been, there is no excuse sowing fear and confusion especially at a time when (UP’s) attention should have been focused on the rising successes of its athletic program. We view with extreme disapproval and condemn violence in any form.” Last Sunday, Farolan posted on his Facebook account a cryptic message that seemed to hint at forthcoming injuries to Ateneo players. “Sayang hindi kumpleto ang players ng Ateneo sa Wednesday. Tatlo injured. Pili na kayo kung sinu-sino mga yon,” he said, adding three devil emojis at the end of it. The post was made a day after the Blue Eagles topped the Fighting Maroons to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Finals in UAAP Season 81. The post went viral not long after and Farolan came under fire for his cryptic message. He ultimately deleted the post before saying “there was sarcasm in that comment which may not have been immediately and easily perceived by some.” Now, the UP BOR has bared that Farolan has apologized for his post during their board meeting. “The BOR takes note of the apology of Farolan regarding his post that appeared to advocate the use of violence against members of the men’s basketball team of Ateneo,” its statement said. Nonetheless, the UP BOR made it a point to extend apologies to its neighboring school. “We apologize to the officials, staff, and athletes of Ateneo for any anxiety Regent Farolan’s statements may have caused. We also deeply regret the dampening of the euphoria of UP reaching the UAAP Finals,” it said. The BOR also made it a point to state that it is against Farolan’s re-appointment to the board. “Committed to a higher standard of accountability for its members, the BOR withdraws recommendation for the re-appointment of Regent Farolan,” its statement said. The BOR is made up of 11 regents – the head of the Commission on Higher Education; the president of UP; the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts, and Culture; the chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education; the president of the UP Alumni Association; one Faculty Regent; one Staff Regent; one Student Regent; and three presidential appointees. Farolan is a presidential appointee. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
