IOC keeps a close eye on latest POC development

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expects the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to abide by its constitution and push through with its elections before the end of the year. IOC representative to the Philippines Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski said in her appearance in Tuesday’s online version of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum that POC will hold its elections this year even if the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was delayed to July next year due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic. “That’s in our by-laws. In other countries, it’s only stated that they will have elections on the Olympic year so naturally that’s 2020. But Olympics was postponed,” said Cojuangco-Jaworski. “But there are countries where the constitution says that whether or not the Olympics pushes through or not there will be elections and we are one of those countries. That is specified. Of course, the IOC expects that we adhere to our own constitution,” she added. Cojuangco-Jaworski, the 2002 Asian Games gold medalist in equestrian, also shared that the IOC is very much aware of what’s happening within the POC. “We at the IOC are regularly in touch,” said Cojuangg-Jaworski, a newly-elected member of the powerful IOC executive committee. The POC was in the news recently because of a heated debate regarding proposed amendments in its constitution and by-laws. But the move to amend the constitution, particularly those concerning a proposed age limit of 70 years old on those seeking elective positions in the POC, was met by a strong opposition. The other key amendments include disallowing persons to hold the position of president in more than one NSA (national sports association), the withdrawal of recognition on NSAs that are no longer affiliated with their IFs (international federations). After two meetings among members of the executive committee, nothing was finalized, and it’s all back to square one. Cojuangco-Jaworski said the IOC has been pushing for amendments in the constitutions of the different NOC (National Olympic Committee). “There are many developments in the Olympic movement and we want to keep up. The IOC wants the amendments to take effect before the different NOCs hold their elections,” said Cojuangco-Jaworski in the session presented by San Miguel Corp. Go For Gold, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), and powered by Smart, with Upstream Medias as official webcast partner......»»

Another U-turn slot to close along EDSA on Nov. 9

Heads up, motorists! The fourth U-turn slot that will be closed on EDSA is the one near Dario Bridge in Quezon City. (Photo from MMDA) The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said it will be closed to vehicular traffic on Monday (November 9). Per the agency, they have already installed signages on EDSA to inform motorists of the impending closure. The agency has advised affected motorists to take the following alternate routes: From northbound going southbound, they may take the U-turn slot near Oliveros Drive in front of Shell station. Those southbound, meanwhile, may utilize the U-turn slot beneath the EDSA-Quezon Avenue flyover. MMDA Chairman Danny Lim said the agency is one with the Department of Transportation (DOTR) in exploring ways to facilitate faster movement of both commuters and private motorists on EDSA, adding that the closure of 13 U-turn slots along EDSA are aimed at easing traffic congestion on the major thoroughfare. The MMDA said this will pave the way for the new EDSA Busway/ Carousel project of DOTR which designates the innermost lane as exclusive for buses travelling along the national highway.  So far, MMDA has closed three U-turn slots — the ones near North Avenue, in front of Quezon City Academy and near Corregidor Street. The 13 U-turn slots are targeted to be closed by the end of this year to make travel time on EDSA faster, or at least reduced  by 20 minutes from the opposing points of the major road. .....»»

French church attacker tests positive for Covid-19

The Tunisian assailant who killed three people at a church in France has tested positive for Covid-19, which could further delay his questioning, a source close to the inquiry said Tuesday. A woman lights a candle outside Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Basilica in Nice on October 31, 2020, to pay tribute to the victims two days after a knife attacker killed three people, cutting the throat of two, inside the church of the French Riviera city, and police arrest a young Tunisian migrant from Sfax who arrived in Europe only last month, according to French prosecutors. (Photo by Valery HACHE / AFP) Brahim Issaoui, 21, remains hospitalized after being shot several times by police after the knife rampage at Nice’s  Notre-Dame basilica on Thursday. “He hasn’t yet been questioned, his prognosis remains uncertain,” another inquiry source told AFP late Monday. Issaoui, who was known to Tunisian police for violence and drug offences, arrived in France only last month, having first crossed the Mediterranean to the Italian island of Lampedusa. Italian media reports say he was initially placed in quarantine with nearly 400 other migrants aboard a ferry boat, before being allowed to disembark  at Bari on October 9. Investigators have since determined he arrived in Nice on October 27, just two days before the church attack. One woman had her throat cut and a church employee was also fatally stabbed inside the church, while another woman managed to flee but later died of her wounds. Police say Issaoui yelled “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) as they apprehended him, leading officials to say it was the latest in a string of jihadist attacks on French soil in recent years. Six people have been detained for questioning over suspected links with Issaoui, but only one remained in custody Tuesday, a 29-year-old Tunisian who was aboard the boat that brought Issaoui to Lampedusa, sources said......»»

Millions more face English virus restrictions as cases spiral

Millions more people in northern England face stricter coronavirus rules next week, officials said Friday, as reports suggested the government is considering a nationwide lockdown. A digital display shows NHS health advice on the coronavirus in Leeds on October 30, 2020. – West Yorkshire is to be placed under tier three Covid restrictions from November 2, 2020, the strictest level of rules. (Photo by Lindsey Parnaby / AFP) From Monday, nearly 2.4 million residents in five districts of West Yorkshire, including in the city of Leeds, will be barred from socialising with other households indoors. Pubs and bars not serving “substantial meals” must close, alongside casinos and betting shops, while people have also been told to avoid unnecessary travel. The Department of Health said the measures were needed as infection rates in West Yorkshire were among the highest in the country and rising rapidly. The Times reported Friday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was considering a return to a national lockdown to battle the surge. Johnson was expected to hold a press conference on Monday to announce new restrictions, which would close everything except “essential shops”, schools and universities, the paper said, quoting a government source. In its weekly study of Covid-19 prevalence, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the number of people with the virus had increased to around one in 100 nationwide. “There has been growth in all age groups over the past two weeks; older teenagers and young adults continue to have the highest current rates while rates appear to be steeply increasing among secondary school children,” it said. The country’s official science advisory panel warned in a report published Friday that the virus was spreading “significantly” faster and that hospitalisations were rising at a higher rate through England than its predicted “worst-case” scenario drawn up in July. The report said that in mid-October, shortly before new local rules were introduced, around four times as many people were catching Covid than anticipated in the July report. That study warned that 85,000 more people could die during the winter wave. West Yorkshire’s imminent restrictions are the latest step in the UK government’s localised response to the surging transmission, which has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks. More than 11 million people — about a fifth of England’s population — will be under the tightest measures from next week. Most of the areas in the “very high” category of the government’s three-tier Covid alert system are in northern and central parts of the country. Nottingham became the latest city to enter the highest tier Friday. On Thursday night, young people took to the streets in fancy dress and drank in large groups before a ban on alcohol sales in shops came into force at 2100 GMT. – ‘Targeted’ – The pandemic has hit Britain harder than any other country in Europe, with more than 45,000 people having died within 28 days of testing positive. Case rates are spiralling again after a lull, tracking the situation elsewhere on the continent. England is seeing nearly 52,000 new cases daily, a 47 percent weekly rise, according to the ONS, which conducts its analysis of households with the help of several universities and health bodies, and excludes people in hospitals and care homes.  Britain’s European neighbours and the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have reimposed partial lockdowns to try to cut infection rates. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Friday the government would continue its “targeted and focused” strategy of local restrictions in virus hotspots. “The arbitrariness of a blanket approach would be far worse than the effects of trying to be as targeted as possible,” he said. Meanwhile, a new study reported Friday that a Covid-19 variant originating in Spanish farm workers has spread rapidly throughout Europe in recent months and now accounts for most cases in Britain. The variant — called 20A.EU1 — is thought to have been spread from northeastern Spain by people returning from holidays there, according to the study, which is awaiting peer review in a medical journal. There is currently no evidence that the strain spreads faster or impacts illness severity and immunity......»»
