James and Lakers advance with 131-122 win over Trail Blazers

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — While the ultimate objective is to win a title, LeBron James said the Los Angeles Lakers achieved a key goal against the Portland Trail Blazers — and it wasn't simply to win the first-round playoff series. It was improvement. “We got better throughout the course of the series,” James said. “We knew we were coming into a series versus a hot Portland team that was playing the best basketball inside the bubble along with Phoenix. So we wanted to just come in and try to work our game, get better and better as the games went on, as the series went on. And I believe we did that.” James had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and the Lakers advanced to the Western Conference semifinals, beating the short-handed Blazers 131-122 in Game 5 on Saturday night (Sunday morning in the Philippines). Anthony Davis had a playoff-best 43 points for the top-seeded Lakers in their first playoff appearance since 2013. The Lakers hadn't won a playoff series since 2012. James has never lost a first-round playoff series, going 14-0. The Lakers will play the winner of the series between Houston and Oklahoma City. The Rockets took a 3-2 lead with a 114-80 victory earlier Saturday. CJ McCollum had 36 points for the surprisingly scrappy Trail Blazers, who played without injured All-Star guard Damian Lillard. Carmelo Anthony added 27 points. Down 14 in the third quarter, Portland got to 100-97 on McCollum's layup and tied it on Anfernee Simon's 3-pointer to cap an 8-point run with 9:46 left. James answered with a 3. Gary Trent Jr.'s 3-pointer tied it at 109 with just under seven minutes to go. Again the Lakers held off Portland with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's 3. After Trent's 3-pointer closed it to 114-112 with 4:53 left, Davis had a personal 11-0 run to put Los Angeles up 123-112 and all but seal it. The game was originally set for Wednesday night, but players collectively decided not to play in the three playoff games scheduled for that day to protest racial injustice following the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Games on Friday were also postponed. James said he hopes the past few days made a difference. “Obviously, the bubble season will never be forgotten. In sports this is the first time we’ve been able to do something like this, but this moment is so much bigger than us playing basketball,” James said. “Hopefully, years on down the line, when America is in a better place, you can look back to this moment and be like, that was one of the catapults that kind of got it going.” Lillard injured his right knee in Game 4 that prompted him to leave the bubble in Florida and return to Portland to see team doctors. Lillard was named MVP of the seeding games heading into the playoffs, averaging 37.6 points and 9.6 assists in eight games. Trent Jr. took his Lillard's spot in the opening lineup. But because of injuries the eighth-seeded Blazers had just nine players available for the game. “All you can do is hope to hang around and make it a fourth quarter game and win in the end, and we didnt quite win it in the end," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. Portland's lone win in the first-round series came in Game 1. TIP INS Trail Blazers: In addition to Lillard, Portland was without Zach Collins because of left ankle inflammation, Nassir Little with dehydration and Wenyen Gabriel with right quad tendonitis. Lakers: Rajon Rondo practiced on Friday but remained inactive for Game 5 as he recovers from a fractured right thumb and back spasms. ... Dion Waiters was game-time decision with a migraine but was available. MOURNING UNCLE CLIFFY: There was a moment of silence before the game for former Trail Blazer Cliff Robinson. He died Saturday at 53. Robinson played 18 seasons in the NBA, his first eight in Portland, and later made the city his home. Portland players also wore headbands during the game in his honor. “His personality and energy were unmatched, and his contributions on the court were unmistakable, helping the Trail Blazers into the playoffs each of his eight seasons with the team,” the Blazers said in a statement. The moment of silence also recognized former Arizona coach Lute Olson and actor Chadwick Boseman. CIVIC DUTY: The Lakers announced before the game than that Staples Center will serve as a voting center for the upcoming general election. Voters can cast ballots at the arena from Oct. 30 through Nov. 3. The arena will also serve as a drop-off site for ballots......»»

Desiderio names 3 PBA players that gave him the 'wow factor'

For incoming second-year guard Paul Desiderio, there are three PBA players who truly gave him the wow factor in the PBA. Blackwater's former no. 4 pick named TNT's Jayson Castro, San Miguel Beer's Alex Cabagnot, and Magnolia's PJ Simon as the guys that stood out to him once he made it to the league following an inspiring UAAP stint with the UP Fighting Maroons. Desiderio made the reveal on Extra Rice with Rain or Shine's Beau Belga. "Unang-una, na-ano talaga ako sa basketball IQ ni coach Alex [Cabagnot]," Desiderio said. "Tapos, si Jayson Castro sobrang bilis. Then si Peter June Simon, yun talaga ginagaya-gaya ko. Talagang idol na idol ko yun, bawat galaw niya," he added. In an on-the-spot scenario, Mr. Atin 'To also named the player he'll start, bench, and cut. Desiderio got pretty logical with the player he was going to cut. "Ang hirap naman. Pero start ko si kuya Jayson, kasi nga best point guard in Asia. Then bench ko si coach Alex," he said. "Syempre pa-retire na rin si kuya PJ, siya na lang cut ko," Desiderio added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Team owners, officials and broadcasters raise funds for MPBL day-to-day employees

With the 2020 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Playoffs suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the league's day-to-day employees took a massive blow. The last time the league had a game day was back in March 11. That's why San Juan-Go for Gold team governor Chris Conwi made sure that the Chooks-to-Go-backed league's employees composed of the staff, referees, table officials, among others got some help financially. Conwi initiated a donation drive called "COVID-19 Bayanihan sa MPBL" in which he called on the team owners to give any amount to help the employees. "I made a note in our group chat with the team owners. Any amount will do to help our MPBL staff who are paid on a per-game basis," said Conwi. The response to Conwi's call was overwhelming as Atty. Brando Viernesto, Emmer Oreta, Sarangani head coach John Kallos, Nueva Ecija owner Bong Cuevas and team manager Jai Reyes, Rizal part-owner Jowell Conde, Makati owner Paolo Orbeta, Go for Gold godfather Jeremy Go, Bacoor team governor Dennis Abella, Simon Mangio of Pampanga, Laguna vice mayor Gel Alonte, Claudine Bautista of Davao Occidental, Zamboanga owner Anita Kaw, Sam Lato of Valenzuela, Jemina Sy's Muntinlupa, Onyx Crisologo of Quezon City, Ruby Navarro of Imus, Justin Tan of Mindoro, Mark Tan of Bicol, Iloilo part-owner JJ Javelosa, Joan Villafuerte of Parañaque, Jun Reyes of Bulacan, and MPBL commentators Cedelf Tupas, Christian Luanzon, and Martin Javier stepped up to the plate. As of Saturday, April 11, the drive has raised over PHP 330,000. Almost 80 employees of the league received the funds through their Money Padala accounts a day later. With this, Conwi reminded the staff and the fans of MPBL to keep safe during this pandemic. "Mag ingat po tayong lahat, sundun natin ang quarantine policies. Prayers lang at magkikita kita tayo ulit sa pagbabalik ng MPBL!" COVID-19 Bayanihan sa MPBL will continue until the league's operations go back to normal......»»

PBA: Terrence Romeo s SMB move earns him the Mr. Quality Minutes award

In his first season with San Miguel, Terrence Romeo has completely reinvented himself, resulting in his best year in terms of total accomplishments. Coming off the bench for the Beermen, Romeo ended up winning his two championships, including his first Finals MVP award in the Commissioner's Cup. Terrence's final award from last season is the Mr. Quality Minutes trophy, basically the PBA's equivalent for the 6th man of the Year award. Last season, Romeo played 48 games for San Miguel and averaged 12.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 23.7 minutes per outing. He started only for two games, the same as teammates Ronald Tubid, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, and less than Kelly Nabong. Romeo will be awarded by the PBA Press Corps. The awards night was originally scheduled last March 16 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the ensuing enhanced community quarantine forced a postponement. Previous Mr. Quality Minutes from recent seasons include Vic Manuel, Jio Jalalon, and Jericho Cruz. Jayson Castro, PJ Simon, Ronald Tubid, and Rodney Santos are the only two-time winners since the award's inception in 1993.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

PBA: Retiring PJ Simon leaves lasting legacy for bench players to be legends

With recent developments, it appears like PJ Simon's jersey ceremony and retirement will be pushed back a little bit. Nevertheless, Simon is set in his decision to hang up his sneakers after one last run with the Hotshots. Magnolia is set to honor him too, retiring his jersey no. 8. The ceremony was originally set for May 10 during the first Manila Clasico of the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup. "Sobrang honored ako na yun yung gagawin sa akin ng Purefoods. Yun yung gesture nila na gagawin nila sa akin parang yung ginawa nila kay Alvin [Patrimonio], ire-retire yung jersey ko during game," Simon said. "Nakaka-touch at the same time parang mixed yung emotions mo. Nakaka-touch pero parang malulungkot ka rin, mami-miss mo rin talaga for sure," he added. Playing 17 years in the PBA, all with the Purefoods franchise, Simon is currently an 8-time champion and one-time Grand Slam winner. Pushing 40 years old, it's just the perfect time to retire he says. "Siguro it’s time na. Para din sa mga next generation na rin, nagawa ko na rin yung part ko," Simon said. "Nakaka-lungkot dahil feeling ko kaya ko pa, but sa tingin ko ito na yung time," he added. Simon paired up with James Yap to form one of the most deadly scoring combos in the PBA during their prime. While he's slowed down in his later years, Simon is happy with the work he did and feels like his legacy is set. Known as the "Scoring Apostle," Simon certainly did well for a former 5th-round pick. "Doon sa mga bench player at yung mga hindi na-draft, huwag lang silang mawalan ng pag-asa kasi yun talaga yung nangyari sa akin. There were times na gusto ko na mag-give up but sige lang," he said. "Yun siguro yung legacy na maiiwan ko. Kaya minsan naisip ko kung bakit ako nag-struggle noong first 2 years ko, 3 years, dahil parang feeling ko yun pala yung maiwan ko, na maging inspiration ako sa mga hindi nakakalaro masyado. Hopefully, doon sa mga hindi na-draft, hindi sila mawalan ng pag-asa. Huwag silang gumive up dahil kung makaya ko, for sure makakaya rin nila," Simon added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
