CJ Perez happy to help out as driver-slash-model for wife s business

The year 2020 has actually been good to CJ Perez. Along with winning Rookie of the Year in the PBA, the top overall pick in the 2019 Draft officially tied the knot with now-wife Sienna and the newlyweds are expecting their second child. Aside from baby Tanisha and her soon-to-be sibling, though, the Perezes apparently have another baby that needs looking after. A month ago, CJ and Sienna opened an online store selling handmade crafts for the home - and of course, they had to name it after their firstborn. For the cornerstone of Terrafirma Dyip, he has no worries whatsoever about having a new business in the face of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. "Business partner ko asawa ko e so ang dali lang ng trabaho. Yung trust tsaka yung suporta ko, nasa kanya lang lagi," he said. He then continued, "Kung saan siya masaya, dun din ako. I-try lang namin 'to, malay natin, lumaki." Tanisha's specializes in rattan baskets, drawers, hampers, planters, organizers, racks, trays as well as pots made by locals in Nueva Ecija. One thing the startup has going for it is its driver-slash-model. "CJ is my driver, delivery guy, kargador, and model all at the same time," Sienna said, with a laugh. He then continued, "His positivity keeps me going. He believes in me so I promised myself I wouldn't let him down." Yes, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Gilas Pilipinas member CJ Perez may very well be seen bringing over their goods to Balintawak where delivery services would then be the ones to take them to clients. While the 6-foot-1 playmaker, for sure, is the main man in Tanisha's, just as important are the Nueva Ecija craftsmen who make it all possible. "We decided to go home to my province as we thought it would be safer. Once we were here, I started redecorating my bedroom and found myself fascinated with our local products," his wife shared. She then continued, "I asked a local craftsman if they can do the designs of baskets, organizers, wall decors, and hanging lamps I wanted and they did them. I fell in love with each of them and posted them on social media. It gained so much attention so I thought maybe I could make this my business." Deciding to push through with it once and for all was far from easy, of course. "I was hesitant at first. I asked him, 'What if walang bumili?'" Mrs. Perez narrated. She then continued, "But CJ was so supported. He told me na, 'It's okay. If nobody buys it, then it's not for us. We'll just try another business." And so, with funds from his first year in Columbian (now Terrafirma) as well as all his games for Gilas Pilipinas and winnings from individual awards, the Perezes launched Tanisha's. Just a month into its launch, the online store has nearly two thousand followers. And the newlyweds are nothing but hopeful that this is just the start for them in business. "For now, taga-support muna ako sa gusto ng asawa ko. Sana nga, magkaroon pa kami ng malaking business," the husband said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Taiwan grandparents become Instagram stars modeling abandoned clothes

Taiwan’s trendiest couple these days are neither young celebrities nor teen influencers — they are an octogenarian duo who run a mom-and-pop laundry service and have become an online sensation by modeling abandoned clothes. Chang Wan-ji, 83, and his wife Hsu Sho-er, 84, have racked up nearly 600,000 followers on Instagram over the last month as their attitude-filled fashion portraits went viral (AFP Photo/HSU Tsun-hsu) Chang Wan-ji, 83, and his wife Hsu Sho-er, 84, have racked up nearly 600,000 followers on Instagram over the last month as their attitude-filled fashion portraits went viral. They have even been featured in the Taiwanese edition of Vogue and Marie Claire. The couple have run a laundry for decades in a small town near the central city of Taichung. Over the years, customers have either forgotten or failed to collect reams of clothing that the couple never felt able to throw away. Grandson Reef Chang, 31, hit upon the idea of using the clothes to alleviate the couple’s boredom. “My grandpa and grandma were staring blankly at the streets because business wasn’t good,” he told AFP. “I wanted to find something new they could enjoy doing.” The pair were naturals in front of the camera. “Modelling these clothes makes me feel 30 years younger,” beamed Chang, when AFP paid a visit to the store earlier this week.  “Many people are telling me ‘You are famous now and you look younger’.” Hsu felt so, too. “I am old in age but my heart is not ageing,” she said. “I like to put on pretty clothes and go out to have some fun.” Worldwide fame It was while modelling other people’s garments, Hsu came to remember that she also had many forgotten outfits in her closet which she has since rediscovered. “I even found some clothes I bought 30 years ago and I can still wear them. It’s a happy surprise,” she said. The couple’s Instagram account — @wantshowasyoung — is managed by grandson Reef.  Chang currently only uses the Line messaging app to make free phone calls but Reef says his grandfather is keen to learn how to make the perfect Instagram post. The account first started going viral abroad and around 400,000 new fans have started following in the past week alone after major international media picked up on their success. Reef said he translates and reads out fan mail pouring in from all over the world. “We’re very moved by the messages,” he told AFP, “Many people are saying that ‘Wantshowasyoung’ is the first happy news they’ve seen in this dark year marred by the Covid-19 pandemic and problems in many countries,” he added. The couple’s worldwide fame has also prompted a few forgetful customers to pick up old clothes, while some local fans have started visiting their sleepy town to see the store. The shop is named “Wan Sho” — a combination of the middle character of their Chinese names. Re-use clothes The couple tied the knot in an arranged marriage six decades ago, a practice then common in Taiwan. Chang said he had thought about retiring but decided to stay on as long as he can as the laundry business has become less labour-intensive thanks to machines.  “Elderly people should keep moving and remain active or we will age faster… When I am working and being kept busy, I don’t have time to worry,” he said. Chang says he has lost count of how many garments have gone uncollected in his shop over the decades but he thinks there are at least 400 items at the moment. Many more have been donated to charities and impoverished families over the years. The couple hope to use their new social media clout to promote the concept of “environmental fashion”.  “Instead of following ‘fast fashion’ and keep buying new clothes, we hope people can see that old and second-hand clothes can be fashionable if you arrange and combine them in new ways,” said Reef Chang.  “This would cause less damage to the earth and the environment.” .....»»

National U s historic championship was an Altamirano family affair

National University's 60-year title drought came to a close in 2014.  And according to head coach Eric Altamirano, it was already predetermined even before the season started. "Ang totoo nyan, nung offseason nun, puro kami talo, hindi talaga kami nananalo sa mga liga. One day, kasama ko si Luigi, kinukwento ko sa kanya na nag-struggle nga ang team," he shared in The Prospects Pod, referring to his second son.  He then continued, "Pero sabi ni Luigi, 'Dad magcha-champion tayo ngayon.' As I look back now, I remember that day na sinabi nga ni Luigi yun and nagkatotoo nga."  At the end of UAAP 77, Luigi proved prophetic, witnessing his dad guide the Bulldogs to a long-awaited and much-desired title.  Of course, the dominant defense, the difference-making presence of Alfred Aroga, and the total team effort of the blue and gold contributed to that.  At the same time, very much key was the all-out support of coach Eric's wife, children, and entire household.  "Tinuring nila kami na parang sarili nilang mga anak," pesky guard Pao Javelona shared. "Sobrang grateful ko kanila tita Marissa pati sa wives ng iba pang coaches kasi iba yung turing nila sa amin. Sobrang laking bagay ng mga Altamirano sa amin."  In the brilliant tactician's six-season stint in Sampaloc, wife Marissa, sons Anton and Luigi, daughter Aby, and several other members of the household were fixtures behind the scenes.  While coach Eric was, well, coaching, the other Altamiranos were also right there as much-welcome helping hands - on or off the court.  "Ako, tumira ako sa bahay nila, parang anak na talaga ang turing nila sa akin kasi sa iisang bubong lang kami nakatira," now-Gilas Pilipinas forward Troy Rosario said. "Pagpupunta kami ng practice, si coach Eric na nga gumigising sa akin. Si tita Marissa, lahat ng mga kailangan, kumpleto."  Indeed, in the same way that coach Eric changed the culture of basketball in National U, so did he and his family change the lives of his players. "Siguro, nung first three years ko sa NU, sobrang pasaway ako sa kanya. Talagang hindi ako sumusunod kasi may sarili akong mundo nun na parang sobrang bilib siguro ako sa sarili ko," versatile wing Glenn Khobuntin said.  He then continued, "Pero kung pinabayaan lang niya ako nun, hindi ko alam kung anong mangyayari sa life ko. Nadiretso buhay ko nung palagi pa rin niya akong kinakausap after practice."  Now, Khobuntin has the Altamiranos as the template for what he wants his own family to become. "When I had my own family na, doon ko na-realize kung bakit niya ginagawa yun. Parang gusto ko ngang magmura kapag naiisip ko e," he said.  He then continued, "Grabe. Sobrang thankful akong nakilala ko sila kasi hindi lang sa basketball yung impact nila sa akin e. Kung paano i-handle ni coach E yung family niya, ganun din gusto ko."  In the end, the team captain of the Bulldogs' UAAP 77 champion team could do nothing but express how much he loved his mentor.  "I love you, coach," Khobuntin said. "Thank you."  Without a doubt, his teammates only share the same sentiments.  ---  Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo. .....»»

Ramirez writes OSG to seize assets of payroll scammer

Philippine Sports Commission chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez seeks the help of the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) on the agency's case against one of its staff discovered to be cheating the government in a payroll scam. Back from his month-long leave to take care of his sick wife, the PSC head hit the ground running on Monday addressing the latest controversy to hit the sports agency. "We need all the help we can get to get to the bottom of this and make every effort that nothing of this sort ever happens again," explained Ramirez, who also convened the sports agency's board the same day to discuss the matter as well as other pertinent matters needing the body's decision. In the letter to the OSG, Ramirez sought "assistance in instituting proper proceedings relative to the complaint filed against Paul Michael Ignacio" including garnishment of all real or personal property and the reversion of these back to the government. Just a week ago, Ignacio was taken by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents acting on the request of PSC's Executive Director Merlita Ibay for assistance on the discovered payroll padding committed by Ignacio. This also prompted the agency to take stock of its entire operations, some areas of which received ISO certification just last year. "The board is 100% with the Chairman on this," said Commissioner Ramon Fernandez who was Officer in Charge when the irregularity came to notice.  Atty. Guillermo Iroy, Jr., Deputy Executive Director for Support has been appointed to lead the legal team in pursuing the case. In the same board meeting, it was also approved to have process and organizational auditors to help the agency in its mission to fortify all bureaus. Ramirez explained that "we need fresh eyes to take a look at our processes and seek out areas that need to be strengthened."  Another online meeting is set on Wednesday between the board and the audit team......»»
